I'm not going to give you any Bible verses to look up, for those of you who are not familiar with the Bible, you're going to have to do a little research on your own here. Whose laws are right about divorce, Jesus or Moses?
I would imagine that there is at least 1200 years difference, between Moses and Jesus. The only information that I could find on Moses, was his death around 1271 B.C... That's a lot of time and divorce laws could have definitely changed, but that still brings us back to which one is right, Jesus or Moses?
According to Moses, you simply needed to hand your wife a piece of paper that says,” I divorced thee.” This would tell your wife, that she is no longer going to be welcome in your home. She wouldn't have any rights or claims to your possessions and that was just the way it was.
Moses's laws were simple, you didn't want to be married anymore, you simply kicked your wife out of the house and she was now on her own. Obviously God supported this or he wouldn't have allowed Moses to write this down in his holy book.
Now Jesus had a different point of view, he stated that the only way that you were allowed to divorce your wife, would have been if she was having an affair. He states that adultery is the only way that you would be allowed to ever divorce your wife.
Jesus doesn't say anything about the man committing adultery or his wife divorcing him, he simply states that, if the woman is sexually immoral, you can divorce her and marry another woman, if she meets the Bible standards for a new wife.
I'm not going to get into much more detail, Moses states one thing and Jesus states another. Which one of them are right in which one of them are wrong, is up to you to decide.
Could this actually be a basic problem with biblical scripture and those who wrote these laws? Was the way of Moses acceptable, until Jesus changed the law? Or does anyone even care?
These are questions that you can ask your religious leaders and biblical scholars in your religious organization or you can do your own research to find the answers for yourself. I suggest doing your own research and asking your religious leaders.
